Barambah Vineyards is a family owned producer of premium wines from South Burnett’s oldest and highly-acclaimed grape vines, grown in the northern Moffatdale wine region (centred around Bjelke-Petersen Dam). At an altitude of approximately 300m, the vineyard enjoys an ideal climate of warm summer days – tempered in the evening by cooling maritime breezes that roll through a rare gap in the Great Dividing Range – and cold, frosty winter mornings. Combining top quality fruit and exquisite winemaking from acclaimed connoisseur and Master of Wine (MW) Peter Scudamore-Smith, this is stylish example of fine Queensland wine.
The 2009 vintage was hot and dry and delivered a more intense, punchier Shiraz than usual, making it the perfect choice for a Shiraz Viognier blend. South Burnett Shiraz is generally lighter and more approachable in style, exhibiting broader fruit flavours and a white pepper spice on the finish, rather than the more characteristic oaky, cracked black pepper style championed by many of their southern counterparts.
The subtle addition (a homage to the Côte-Rôtie style popular in the northern Rhône region of France) of Darling Downs sourced Viognier juice (co-fermented at a ratio of 93% Shiraz, 7% Viognier) lifts the flavours and perfumes of the Shiraz, delivering a lighter, smoother style. The judicious use of French Oak hogshead barrels and careful bottle ageing brings forth chocolatey notes and firm tannins. Equally at home with a light cheese plate or a thick juicy steak, this Shiraz Viognier is a terrific all-rounder and is sure to impress.
